Bothitong/Kiangkop Tourism Development

In recent years tourism has developed dramatically. The effect of this has been to trigger a variety of socio-economic, cultural and ecological changes. In many instances in the past too little consideration has been given to these factors especially at local government level. Joe Morolong Local Municipality has realized that the construction and maitenance of tourist and travel facilities and the establishment of accompanying services are important incentives for economic growth and development of Joe Morolong area. For those areas/villages with natural tourism resources and limited industrial capability like kiangkop, tourism is an important source of income, foreign exchange receipts and employment.

Given the above reason, it came to the notice of Joe Morolong Local Municipality to plan and design a cultural village at Bothitong and to further develop a 4x4 route as part of the initiative to develop a new tourism opportunities and facilities. With this massive project, the municipality anticipate to contribute significantly to improving the lives of its inhabitants through creating employment prospects and generating income from activities that will be undertaken after the completion of the project.
The initial budget for the project was R 1,5 million for phase 1 which is planning and design of the project.

The envisaged cultural village and associated facilities will include the following:

  • Four chalets (Traditional housing structure) to be constructed from natural stone and materials form the area representing the traditional architecture of the area, each approximately 75m2 in size including bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and open plan living area.
  • An interpretative centre of approximately 120m2 which will provide for the display and exhibition of history and cultural of the area.
  • A restaurant building (including kitchen) adjacent to the interpretation centre with a seating for a maximum of 20 people, approximately 100m2 in size.
  • A curio/Arts and craft production, manufacturing and selling area adjacent to the restaurant and interpretative centre providing some space for local artisans to produce their articles as well as a display and selling area. The total area is approximately 100m2.
  • Shelter at the identified lookout point as well as paved walkway between the cultural village and this lookout point.
