Moshaweng Integrated Energy Centre
The
centre was officially launched by Minister Hendricks in
September 2005 at Laxey village. The
project was identified as the priority issue in the council's
2003/2004 IDP document, This concept of community based energy
cooperative is inline with The President's Integrated
Sustainable Rural Development Strategy (ISRDP) which aims
at assisting the rural poor by coordinating service delivery and
providing infrastructure in the rural areas of our country and
district. This energy centre is 100km from the municipal offices
of Joe Morolong Local Municipality and serve the population of
ten surrounding villages with the estimated population of 20 000
residents. The centre is
sponsored through a partnership contribution of Sasol, DME and
Joe Morolong Local Municipality. The Municipality donated
building and an amount of R500 000.00. Sasol committed R3,5
million towards the renovation of the building and set up of the
centre and DME which contributed largely on the education and
training of local communities staff and board members in respect
of energy conservation. The project was registered as a
cooperative in October 2004 with a 100% shareholders 80% being
women and 20% male youth, recruited from ten villages around
Laxey at a membership of R150.00 per shareholder.
The Energy Centre is divided into
two sections namely:
- Commercial sale of petrol,
diesel, illuminated paraffin, gas and shop which sells basic
necessities.
- Information centre which
provide information to the community about Government
services.
Objectives:
- Bringing energy
products/services closer to rural communities.
- Creation of income
generating business around energy.
- Building community
participation and ownership.
- Job Creation and poverty
alleviation.
- Development of SMME's
